Ultrasignup Registration

Alpine Lake

This year's race beneficiary will again be - The Hatuey Project. 100% of your entry fee for this race (not including the Ultrasignup fee) will be donated to The Hatuey Project, whose mission is to provide medicines to Cuban children with cancer who are unable to obtain the best medicines appropriate for their condition due to the effects of the U.S. blockade (note: all medicines are legally exported under license). Furthermore, your entry fee will be matched by the race director, so your effective contribution will be double.

Race Details

Start/Finish

Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve parking lot on the west side of Skyline Blvd. (Highway 35), 0.9M S/SE of the intersection of Page Mill Rd. and Skyline Blvd. (35), and 5.4M N/NW of the intersection of Rt. 9 and 35. Note that, like the traditional Stevens Creek 50K, this race starts in the horse trailer lot to the left. The only bathroom is in the other parking lot (the one to the right), so if you arrive at the site needing to go, turn right first, do your business, and then come over to the other parking lot for the start.

Date

SUNDAY, March 23, 2025 (Note the change: this year's race is on Sunday, not Saturday)

Start Time

9 am (check-in starts in 8)

Distance

13.0M

Fee

$35 on Ultrasignup with an optional but strongly encouraged additional contribution (this is the least expensive race you'll enter all year!) to benefit The Hatuey Project (your additional contribution and your race fee will both be matched by the race director to double your effective contribution). If you want to donate a significant amount (say, $50 or more) and don't want to pay an additional "tax" to Ultrasignup, you can donate directly to The Hatuey Project (it's tax-deductible) here.

Route

A rare course that is simultaneously scenic and runnable. A mix of single-track and fireroad, covered woods and open hillsides. The route goes northwest from the start, following the Bay Area Ridge Trail to Rapley Ranch Rd. where you turn around. It then goes down off the ridge (towards the Pacific), only to return back to the ridge later and return to the finish with a final clockwise loop around Cathedral Hill (that's my name for it). A total of 2535' ascent with rolling hills. This is a runners' course — all hills are relatively gentle and definitely runnable, even for a 72-year-old :-). The course will be marked, but if you are not familiar with it you should download one of the files below to install in your watch or an app like maps.me or RunGo so you can correctly follow the course if the markings are ever unclear to you.

Note for those who have run the Stevens Creek 50K in the past: The course is identical to the last third of the Stevens Creek 50K until you get back to Horseshoe Lake. When you reach the point where you would have turned left to go to the finish line, instead you go straight, up the hill. At the top of the hill the trail wraps back around and takes you through the "Cathedral", a beautiful trail winding through tall trees. When you return to the lake, you follow along the south side of the lake back to the finish line (the horse trailer parking lot).

Awards
Awards for 1st through 3rd male and female runner. A bottle of Cooper-Garrod wine for anyone setting a course record. Current male course record is 1:35:03 by Brian Cox, female record is 1:46:10 by Sylvie Abel.
Bathrooms
At the start there is a bathroom in the main parking lot (the one to the RIGHT when you enter) while the start is in the parking lot to the LEFT, so if you arrive at the site needing to go, turn right first, do your business, and then come over to the other parking lot for the start. There is also a bathroom is in the Skyline Ridge parking lot which you run through at mile 2.2 and 10.0. There are also 13 miles of trails. :-)

Water

There is a water fountain by the Alpine Lake Nature Center which you pass at mile 10 (also at mile 2). There will be an aid station with water and some edibles at Rapley Ranch Rd., mile 6.

Driving

From the north/east, it is probably best to use 92 or 84 to reach 35 (Skyline), and then go south until you pass Page Mill Rd. and then go 0.9M further on the right. From the middle of the Peninsula (e.g., Palo Alto), Page Mill or Moody/Page Mill to Skyline, then left 0.9M. From the south, ascend to 35 on Rt. 9 from Saratoga, and then go north 5.4M to the preserve on your left.
